Is This Cow Porn?

Back when my children were small, I would never have thought to ask this question. We may have been unconscious parents. We did not preview everything we let the girls watch. Then again, media was not the morass it has become. Our parents and we, as parents, had the good old television censorship and politically un-correct guarding our airwaves.

Last week I stated writers weren’t necessarily to blame for the content of our viewing, but that is untrue. Unless an actor ad-libs a line, a writer put it in the script. Yep, every four letter word, curse, obscenity and innuendo for all the world to hear or see has been penned by a writer.

With great talent comes great responsibility. Words shape the world and become the stage for every human interaction. Society is influenced by the written word and society also influences the written word.  Regardless of the animation, I did not find anything wrong with the scripting of Barnyard, but from last week’s post you already know the steer-bull/cow depiction set me back on my heels. In my mind visual is as important as written, so, yes, to me it is cow porn. I do mean cow porn in the most tongue-in-cheek way possible. Those udders sticking out make me cringe.

Perhaps the offense would seem slighter in a different social climate. Today we are having he/she and she/he bathrooms issues forced on society at large because a handful of citizens feel their rights are being abused. Political correctness has become a dirty laundry chute for whatever garbage spews out of twisted minds. Some of those minds belong to writers and I would just like to ask them one thing.  If you are writing something for public consumption do you feel any discomfort viewing it with or reading it to a nun, a toddler or your great grandmother? If you do, keep editing.
