Cookbook Author!

20150517_210310In the world of my publishing a cookbook, things got crazy in a hurry. The girls thought it a wonderful idea and before the idea could even gel in my mind it started gaining momentum. It needed a name, a format and a platform (whatever that was), and by the time I packed up to leave, it seemed I was all for it. I went home and began thinking about what my cook book should look like. Going through the massive document on Word I realized I would never get it done if I didn’t chop it down into manageable sections. I knew I couldn’t visualize further without giving it a name. I thought back to all the time I spent in the kitchen with my grandma, all the dinners I had experimented on and all the times something I made got requested.

Something tickled the back of mind mind and then I thought going in the kitchen and being followed by my husband and his comment, “I thought I heard you in here.” I remembered him once saying “If you hear banging and slamming in our kitchen it means Susan is in the kitchen again. And that is how a title is born.

Thus began the In the Kitchen Again cook book series. On our fall writer’s retreat to Okawville, IL I brainstormed topics for 7 to 8 different cook books and started drawingthe cover art, resurrecting another long dormant dream from the dead. Art.

With my husband, Richard’s, help we got the first cook book In the Kitchen Again In The Kitchen AgainSoups, Stews and Casseroles, up on Amazon on December 27, 2013. I make that sound easy. It wasn’t. On June 9, 2014 we published the second, In the Kitchen Again, Sandwiches and Salads, followed by In the Kitchen Again, Pies and Cakes, on January 18, 2015. Currently I am dividing my time between three projects soon to be published, In the Kitchen Again, Main and Side Dishes, an as of yet unnamed cook book stemming on my experience this past year of making desserts each week for 120 to 150 people and a booklet titled Dying for Sleep, Living with Severe Sleep Apnea.

That long ago NaNoWriMo novel is in its third conception and pushing at me to become number one in my next dream accomplished. Even though I am a recent published author, (I still cringe when I type that) I have much to learn. Like the picture above of the back cover of my original Keepsake Recipe Collection, where this journey began, I continue onward on my cooking and writing exploration. It also reminds me an ending is a beginning to something new. Who would have ever thought a picture of my artwork on my cook book cover would appear in a blog post? Certainly not me.
